According to MSNBC 4.94 million people tuned into ESPN's opening round coverage last week, 47% more than last year. The reason was no secret, the world was watching to see how Woods looked, acted and importantly played golf since returning from his self imposed hiatus.
ESPN reacted to this specific interest by keeping viewers updated all day displaying Woods' score more frequently than informing the public about the overall standings of the Masters. Hourly updates while woods played and when he wasn't the network continually showed clips of each previously played drive and putt.
This coverage was less about golf and more about the celebrity commodity that is Tiger Woods. It was also a smart business strategy by ESPN keeping the ratings high by giving the viewers what they want, not straight golf coverage of relatively unknown participants but Tigers play by play throughout the weekend.
My question remains, is this the type of sports coverage that is expected or do we as viewers want a more complete coverage of a tournament or event?
To most, without Tiger Woods golf is just golf, the preferred sport of middle aged business men. Blah.
